AC/DC are not the kind of band that needs to be reviewed here, It is just something I wanted to do. AC/DC is coming out of my speakers on a weekly if not daily basis so why not say something about their latest record ‘Rock Or Bust’. These Aussie rockers with Scottish roots certainly need no introduction, for more than four decades they are a well oiled high voltage rock and roll machine with millions of albums sold worldwide. Over the years the machine had some malfunctions and also lately AC/DC is having some turbulent times with drummer Phill Rudd going in and out of jail and with mastermind Malcolm Young suffering from Dementia. Cousin, Stevie Young is doing a great job replacing Malcolm, it is Rock Or Bust for the lads in AC/DC I guess.

Let’s talk about the new album. The first thing that catches the eye is the cool looking artwork. It certainly looks very similar to the artwork of Black Ice. It has the typical AC/DC logo but in a rock/stone font with a spectacular looking 3D animation which at the big vinyl format just blows up in your face.

Musically, it is a nice follower to Black Ice. ‘Rock Or Bust’ is full of familiar and smooth sounding rock with a fifties rock’n’roll and a blues foundation, but did you expect something else from AC/DC? The singles ‘Rock or Bust’, ‘Play Ball’ but also ‘Rock The Blues Away’ (which has a Swamp Blues thing going on) immediately get stuck in your head. To be honest, I surely miss that early AC/DC vibe and songs as only AC/DC could make them: ‘Thunderstruck’, ‘It’s A long Way to the Top’, ‘Hells Bells’, ‘High Voltage’, ‘Moneytalks’, ‘For Those About To Rock’, ‘Whole Lotta Rosie’, …

Overall I’m not complaining. ‘Rock Or Bust’ is a very enjoyable and decent rock album, it certainly is a job well done but I just miss their rock’n’roll magic from the 70s and 80s and in a way also the vibe Bon Scott added to the songs. 8/10
