Ten years after they landed. All over the world. And they did nothing, standing on the surface of the Earth like trees, exerting their silent pressure on the world, as if there were no-one here and nothing under foot. Ten years since we learned that there is intelligent life in the universe, but that they did not recognize us as intelligent or alive.
Honestly when saw the cover of this Image comic and read the text above, I got intrigued. Trees is a new science fiction comic series by Warren Ellis (Transmetropolitan, Red) and Jason Howard (Super Dinosaur, Astounding Wolf-Man). This volume 1 collects trees #1-8.
The story takes us alternately to different places in a near-future world where we meet a diversity off people who live in the shadows of the trees. We meet a young painter who arrives in a so called special cultural zone in China, we got introduced to an Italian woman living under the protection of a fascist gang, there is a research team in Svalbard who do a threatening discovery and so on.
Every time I put the comic down I couldn’t wait to start reading again. I guess it is the atmosphere coming from the story and the threat coming from the trees that intrigues me: what are those weird alien trees and what are they going to do? What’s the life story from all those different characters who life in the shadows of the dormant trees? What will happen next?
